Back in the BC, the highly advanced society of Egypt found benefit in a sort of advertising—that is, using different means to spread important information. The advertising was considered persuasive and usually was meant to advertise certain services and even pieces urging government officials to join a cause.
That sounds a lot like public relations and marketing.
Although the history of public relations goes back so far, it largely stayed the same for a quite a while once it got to about a hundred or so years ago. But since the digital revolution happened in the ’90s, things have completely changed. The way we receive and publish information has crossed over into a completely new platform: the Internet.
Let’s take a look at some of the ways public relations has changed in the last couple decades.
This is a big one. Not only has social media changed the way we communicate, but it’s also changed the way we advertise and inform. Now, information is even more accessible and digestible on the internet. The work put into searching for something is cut in half when things are essentially delivered to us.
For example, we have a 24-hour a day cycle of current events and news. No matter where we are, we have access to this information, and it’s basically spoon fed to us. This also provides another avenue for PR firms to get much greater engagement from an audience.
How do you know you’re ever reaching an audience? Hear-say? In the days of print journalism and radio ads, sure—but we’re at the dawn of the digital age, and we see no signs of stopping. It’s more affordable than before
